Choices, Choices: Which Newsletter Platform to Choose?

👋 Hi Reader,

If you have been on the fence to start a newsletter and your focal point of indecision is you cannot decide on the newsletter platform, this issue is for you.

The Dilemma

This week was a blur. I talked to three creators this week and I will talk to two more next week. The topic: which newsletter platform to choose for the future?

My counter question: How many newsletter issues have you pushed out so far?

Turns out, they never got down to sending one, because they could not decide. And they are not the ones slacking: On the contrary, they show up consistently on social, be it LinkedIn, Twitter, or Instagram.

You see - their choice for socials were simple. They knew who their target audience and peers were, and they just followed the cues on where they hung out. And that became their thriving social platform of choice.

But somehow, the very abundance of choice between the thriving trio of newsletter providers (SubStack, ConvertKit, Beehiiv) has driven them to analysis paralysis.

The Solution

Here’s what I told the three creators, and what I would recommend to you too.

If you are starting out:

  • Pick any of these three. It doesn’t matter which one.
  • Stick with it for 10-12 weeks and send out a weekly cadence.
  • Build out the habit of writing and pushing these issues out.
  • The rest works itself out.

What makes you sure about that line of reasoning?

The decision is reversible by design, and your email list can migrate with you where you choose to move.

But hitting publish on emails is as important as it is on socials. Build a posting streak like you would on Instagram, and the newsletter platform of choice becomes apparent as your email list grows.

Stop the decision paralysis. Get started today. Rope me in as a monthly accountability partner - it would help us stay consistent on posting too.

👋 Hi Reader, You may not know this, but my wife and I ran a fashion startup (virtual try-ons) for a year. In 2020. In the heat of COVID. Naturally that did not work out: people were happy to continue in their pajamas. But the tenacity with which we kept tabs on the fashion niche like a hawk never let go. The Business of Fashion subscription might have helped too :) So when Plum Sykes published 'The Fashion-Trust Metric' Substack issue from the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, naturally I...

👋 Hi Reader, History may or may not repeat itself, but it most definitely rhymes. This time, the rhyme is on crypto creators on Instagram. On Friday, I woke up (don't judge me by my morning routine, I am not a biohacker bro) to multiple Instagram crypto community creators losing their audience overnight: Sujal Jethwani @SujalJethwani I just lost 234K people Instagram SUSPENDED my account today And this isn't new. Our previous account, Viral Theories (1M+ followers), was suspended too. - 5...

👋 Hi Reader, An incredible number of new newsletter operators that I speak to follow this pattern: They launch their newsletter with gusto and enthusiasm. They write it for a few weeks without dropping a beat. And then, in a few months, they see other newsletters copy their ideas, format, even the color palette. They find that copycat versions make more noise, especially online, racking up subscribers. And their confidence deflates quickly. My response to them: If you are getting good at what...
