Let’s talk about the digital town square

👋 Hi Reader,

I admire Justin Jackson, founder of Transistor.fm. He always puts the spotlight on thought pieces (not like LinkedIn Thought Leadership, actual long-form thesis) where the attention is due.

So when he talked about Noema’s latest piece on ‘The Last Days of Social Media’, natually I lined it up for a Friday read. And what I read, validated what I had been mulling all along, on why I started LetterStack in the first place.

It’s this: with AI slop taking over our feeds wherever we hang out on social networks, the need to make social conversations relevant is higher than ever before. If people are overwhelmed with the content deluge hitting them, they will ‘quiet quit’ their social presence in favor of something which is much more sporadic, but intentional when it does make an appearance.

Newsletters happens to be the prime focus here. The ability to communicate an idea through long-form exposition, without no character limits or ChatGPT-slop videos (well hello, Sora 2) is the perfect antidote to building a following. And the following need not be millions - niching down to a few thousands would help creators or brands start building their own safe space to engage and cater to a like-minded group of humans.

So if you have been snoozing on the idea of your own digital town square, but are wary of not having enough followership online, this might be the right time. Because if you show up sporadically but with deep intent to write on things your audience cares about, you would automatically stand out.

So go ahead, and build your digital town square.

The gathering might be small, but they would welcome the idea of a space which is real and human.

👋 Hi Reader, Thank you for your patience over the last 10 days. I was due to write this issue on the morning of Feb 28th from Austin, when I heard about the war breaking out. Since then, I had just one priority: to get to my family back home safely as soon as possible. I am now back home after a protracted series of flight delays and cancellations, so let me get right to the task at hand: my takeways from NMS 2026. Pre-event meetup - 25th Feb I was at this event last year. And I was surprised...

👋 Hi Reader, Apologies for the radio silence this week. I had been making my way halfway across the world, so I can attend the New Media Summit in Austin on Feb 26-27. I spent the last couple of days figuring out which city I woke up in :) which is why I missed the usual Sat morning Eastern schedule for this issue. Matt McGarry from Growletter has been one of my primary go-to people for everything related to newsletters. When Growletter organized their first-ever newsletter summit in Feb 2025...

👋 Hi Reader, There’s a school of thought that you might never become rich or famous building for too niche an audience. That you might not be able to reach out to enough subscribers to make your newsletter habit worthwhile. That no body posts videos about your niche online. But that’s where the opportunity lies: To build content in a void that your target audience is craving for. Alexis Grant understood that. Her first two companies got acquired, and while going through the acquisition...
