Youtube mass bans (and what you could do about it)

👋 Hi Reader,

ICYMI, there has been a mass outcry on X over Youtube’s AI review decisions over entire Youtube channels getting wrongfully banned overnight at scale.

Youtuber 'Norse797', who had over 100k subscribers and 25 million lifetime views on his YT channel covering aviation news, was served a ban by an automated Youtube decision mod.

Seems serious, until you realize, the purported reasons were over his comments as a teen years ago on an alternate account.

Turns out, Norse has been appealing his termination for months, but every time his appeals were being auto-rejected, until finally the uproar on X brought the official YT Team handle's (@TeamYouTube) attention.

As of today, the aviation channel has been reinstated with subscriber and view count intact.

HOLY SHIT, WE ARE SO BACK!!! 🎉 @TeamYouTube JUST CONFIRMED MY TERMINATION WAS A MISTAKE! After almost a year of fighting, and being told just days ago that “the original decision stands” my 108K channel is FINALLY reinstated. Thank you to everyone who liked, reposted, and https://twitter.com/TeamYouTube/status/1993626816049791001

In my opinion, Norse797 was fortunate. It seems hundreds of other Youtubers like him are not so fortunate, as ‘Youtube mass bans’ are trending right now as an X topic.

More examples here:

What could you do?

Funny you should ask. You know where I am going to point you to. Like YouTube, building your audience anywhere on socials is going to be akin to living on rented land.

One shadowban or blacklist, and you are back to square one, with no idea on how to bring your audience back. To add to the misery, if the decision making and appeal review is being done with an automated AI with a no-humans-in-the-appeal-loop approach, you can be assured that you need an army of supporters (like Norse797 did) to get any kind of attention to your case.

Moving your subscribers to an email list, where you could take the email list wherever you go, would be the prudent move to make.

How to make that move?

Help me help you.

I talk to dozens of founders and creators every month to understand and put a plan into place on how to prevent an act like this from Youtube be the showstopper on your revenue. I could help you as well.

👋 Hi Reader, Apologies for the radio silence this week. I had been making my way halfway across the world, so I can attend the New Media Summit in Austin on Feb 26-27. I spent the last couple of days figuring out which city I woke up in :) which is why I missed the usual Sat morning Eastern schedule for this issue. Matt McGarry from Growletter has been one of my primary go-to people for everything related to newsletters. When Growletter organized their first-ever newsletter summit in Feb 2025...

👋 Hi Reader, There’s a school of thought that you might never become rich or famous building for too niche an audience. That you might not be able to reach out to enough subscribers to make your newsletter habit worthwhile. That no body posts videos about your niche online. But that’s where the opportunity lies: To build content in a void that your target audience is craving for. Alexis Grant understood that. Her first two companies got acquired, and while going through the acquisition...

👋 Hi Reader, I am a big fan of the work Daniel Greenberg and Matt Huang put out for their Connection Acccepted Podcast. But one thing has always irked me on Daniel’s LinkedIn content. See the part highlighted in his signature below. Daniel's recent LinkedIn Post I believe Daniel is immensely responsible and influential in the way he structures his content and brand. So why would his employer not endorse his content, and enable him to build his brand on full throttle? The systemic mindset with...
