Nobody puts Baby in a corner

👋 Hi Reader,

Third time's the charm I guess.

ICYMI, for the past two weeks, I have been covering how your newsletter could stand the onslaught of AI-flagged content, and still be relevant. This may be the last time I try to make a case for writing content authentically, and then (I think) I will shut up.

I wasn't too keen to write this third issue in a row on this topic, but Kevin Indig's content is a hard one to not share immediately.

Kevin writes a wonderful newsletter called the 'Growth Memo', where he covers his analysis on all things organic and SEO. He recently covered the argument of how every social network is putting up guardrails around AI-flagged content, and what he thinks will be a good resilient approach to withstand the wall of AI slop we encounter these days.

I will let you read Kevin's long-form analysis, but if you have been reading up on our past LetterStack issues, the only thing I would add afresh from Kevin's notes is this aspect:

Attach your identity to the content, and stand by it with evidence unique to your perspective

I wrote about the evidence bit in last week's issue with Varun Anand's Clay writing policy, but I might have left out an important bit: The aspect where you own proprietary insights on the niche no one else can claim.

If you are writing about B2B enrichment like Clay does, then you have insights into your customers unlocking business scenarios, you never knew were possible within your platform.

If you write about cycling in your 40s and how recovery is essential, sharing a weekly log of what's helping you sleep well with a hectic day job and a weekend of cycling, is going to stand out versus generic tips that ChatGPT could give you with a simple prompt.

So attach your identity to the content by sharing your own data, and see yourself become an authority in your corner of the internet.

This wraps up my trilogy on anti-AI-slop writing guidance. We will come back to regular newsletter reporting from next week.

👋 Hi Reader, At this point in time, I might be sounding like a broken record. I have always implored you to use AI for everything except for your writing. I talked about this last week too, when I talked about how Pangram and other AI detection tools are so trained on online writing, that they have started to build false positives for even human-written content showing up as AI-generated. Here's the rub: there have been too many patterns of kicking the proverbial can down the road for...

👋 Hi Reader, As you know, I am a LinkedIn nut. Since I have gone independent 6 years ago, 100% of my clientele came from LinkedIn. So naturally, everytime LI launched a new feature, I keep my eyes peeled on how it affects my target audience and my own content. If you have missed it, LinkedIn has been rolling out ‘Report Your Content as AI Slop’ feature that has the entire network in rapture. A lot of folks feel acknowledged that they finally have a way to cleanse their feed by reporting the...

👋 Hi Reader, The irony is not lost on me. I am covering a newsletter platform exodus today, as I am deliberating switching to a different newsletter platform. But more on that in next week’s issue. I spent time this week going into all the angles on the Emma Roth Substack story from The Verge. In her words, writers are fleeing Substack, because of a pricing model that puts a choke hold on their subscriber business. I think she's right on the money. Emma Roth's Substack story on The Verge We...
